In August of 2004, groundbreaking for the Trailblazer's herb garden began. The work was orchestrated by former Mayor Jim Karabec and achieved with the help of the City Service Department. Sandstone was moved from a foundation site of an old shed on the park property to form the rustic border around the garden. Minimal planting occurred in 2004 but the following year found the herb garden buzzing with activity. Volunteer funding was used to purchase plants and other materials for the garden.
The garden is divided into four areas to promote public education about gardening with herbs. The four sections each demonstrate a different use of herbal plants. Plants used for medicine, fragrances, culinary use and for colorful dyes are presented in this garden. In 2006, the garden was formally introduced to the public through classes on herb gardening as well as group visits hosted by volunteers.
