THE CITY OF TWINSBURG ANNOUNCES THE PASSING OF
FORMER MAYOR JIM KARABEC
Twinsburg, OH, USA, September 9, 2019 - It is with great sadness that the City of Twinsburg announces the passing of former Mayor Jim Karabec. As the second mayor of Twinsburg, Mr. Karabec held the office for twelve years from 1987 to 1999.
Mayor Karabec guided the City of Twinsburg through unprecedented growth during the 1990’s. He governed with innovative ideas that proved extremely beneficial to the City he loved in the years following his time in office. Some of these highlights included embracing diversification of the industrial base in the City so as to not be so beholden to Chrysler; championed the acquisition of 900 acres of land that is now known as Liberty Park; purchasing Glen Eagles Golf Course for the City; oversaw the establishment of a full-time Fire Department and construction of a second Fire Station; and partnered with the schools to establish the new Twinsburg High School and joint Fitness Center. Without Mayor Karabec’s vision and leadership Twinsburg would look much different today.
“Jim will be greatly missed. He was truly committed to the people of Twinsburg, working to improve the city both as an elected official and resident. He was dedicated to the lives of the people of this city, evidenced by his countless contributions and the legacy he built here,” said current Mayor, Ted Yates. “We mourn his loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to his wife Mitzi, his family, and all who knew and worked with him.”
“Jim was my mentor and friend. He was a man of great character, wisdom and compassion who led a life of service.” He was totally committed to the residents of our community. He loved life and lived it to the fullest but there is no doubt that his greatest love was his family. He will be missed in our hearts but never in our memories” said former Mayor Kathi Procop who followed him as the city’s third Mayor.
Prior to seeking elective office Mr. Karabec developed land and businesses for Developers Diversified for approximately twenty five years. Upon retiring from public office, Jim was active in Rotary, the Twinsburg Public Library and the Twinsburg Historical Society among many other endeavors.
Jim’s daughter, Joanne Karabec-Studer wants us to remember that her father lived his life with all the things that were important to him. “Family, friends, travel and giving back to the city he grew up in and to the causes he loved were what mattered most to him. “
Additional information on remembrance services will be provided as they become available.
